STOP GENTRIFICACIÓN LOGROÑO
I received yesterday a document called “Stop
gentrificación Logroño” to sign up if I support their campaign. In this
document they explain many reasons because they are against some false pilgrims of the Way of St. James.
In the document there is a short explanation as to why
they have decided to launch their campaign. I have deduced that they are
against pilgrims and tourists. The campaigners think both groups are not good
for the Way of Saint James and for the town.
I don’t know what to do.
On one hand, I believe they are right saying that many
pilgrims are disrespecting the Way. Some pilgrims, in fact, are taking profit
of the free hostels and cheaper meals that the Way offers to them. What is more,
they look like poor and dirty people. The campaigners conclude that the Way is
in peril. I agree with them in this point of view.
In addition, some bars give customers Ribera del Duero
wines instead of Rioja wines. Logroño is the big trade centre of the La Rioja
wines. And they believe that the bars should support the wines produced in the
region. I am not sure if I agree with them in this part. You have to support
your own product but why have you to be against another product? I don’t
understand them (the campaigners).
Finally, if there are some apartments or rent hikes
against the law I believe this is unfair. Should the police and the lawyers be doing
something about this?
On the other hand, I believe The Way need pilgrims
because they enhance the tradition every year and they are good customers to
many shops in the Way. Maybe you prefer wealthy tourists but you can’t choose
them. Wealthy and poor are going to come anyway.
I don’t like the purpose of offering a different route
to the pilgrims avoiding Logroño. The other routes have never been part of the
Way. And, in this case, you are conning pilgrims.
The document remains inside my desk and I haven’t
signed it, for the moment.
